The Chain Break Problem

AI builds the entire pipeline. But it misses one step. You spend 2 hours finding which one.

Long features are chains. Multiple functions. Multiple services. Multiple network calls. Data flows through 10+ steps before completing.

AI can now build the entire chain at once. You give it requirements. It generates all the pieces.

The problem: It connects 9 out of 10 steps correctly. The 10th is broken.

Example: The Order Processing Pipeline

You ask AI to build an order processing system:

  1. Frontend receives order
  2. Validates cart items
  3. Checks inventory availability
  4. Calculates shipping cost
  5. Processes payment
  6. Updates inventory
  7. Creates shipment
  8. Sends confirmation email
  9. Updates analytics
  10. Logs the transaction

AI generates all 10 steps. 800 lines of code across 6 files.

You test it. Order fails.

Where's the bug?

You don't know. Could be anywhere in those 10 steps.

You ask AI to debug. It looks at the error logs. It guesses: "The payment processing is failing."

You check step 5. Payment looks fine. Not the issue.

You go back to AI. New guess: "The inventory check might be wrong."

You check step 3. Inventory check works. Not the issue.

Third attempt. AI guesses: "Maybe the shipping calculation."

You check step 4. Shipping calculation is correct. Not the issue.

45 minutes later, you find it: Step 7. The shipment creation is calling the wrong API endpoint. AI used the sandbox URL instead of production.

The problem: The bug was in step 7. AI guessed steps 5, 3, and 4. You wasted time checking the wrong places.

Why This Happens

AI doesn't see the execution flow. It sees error logs. It guesses based on text patterns.

It can't trace the actual data flow. It doesn't know which step succeeded and which failed.

You're playing prompt roulette. Guessing which step broke.

The Second Scenario: Adding to an Existing Pipeline

You have an existing refund pipeline:

  1. Receive refund request
  2. Verify order exists
  3. Check refund eligibility
  4. Process refund
  5. Update order status
  6. Send notification

You need to add fraud detection. The new pipeline should be:

  1. Receive refund request
  2. Verify order exists
  3. Run fraud check ← New step
  4. Check refund eligibility
  5. Process refund
  6. Update order status
  7. Log fraud result ← New step
  8. Send notification

You ask AI to add fraud detection to the existing pipeline.

AI modifies the code. You test it. It breaks.

What happened:

AI added the fraud check (step 3). It added the logging (step 7).

But it forgot to update step 5. The refund processing still uses the old logic that doesn't check the fraud result.

The fraud check runs. Gets a result. But nothing uses it. The refund processes anyway, even for fraudulent requests.

You debug for an hour before realizing AI only made 2 out of 3 necessary changes.

The Integration Gap

Long pipelines have multiple integration points. AI needs to:

  • Add new steps
  • Update existing steps to use the new data
  • Pass data correctly between steps

AI often does 90% correctly. But misses one integration point.

The pipeline compiles. Tests pass (if you don't have comprehensive tests). But the behavior is wrong.

The Third Scenario: Data Loss Between Steps

You build a user registration pipeline:

  1. Receive registration data
  2. Validate email format
  3. Check if email exists
  4. Hash password
  5. Create user record
  6. Send verification email
  7. Return success

AI generates it. You test it. Registration works. But verification emails don't arrive.

You debug. You check the email service. It's working. You check the email template. It's correct.

30 minutes later: You find it. Step 6 expects a userId field. Step 5 returns user_id. The casing is different.

AI created the user record with user_id. But the email function expects userId. The data gets lost in the handoff.

Why you didn't catch this immediately:

TypeScript allows it. Because AI used any type for the intermediate data.

The type system didn't catch it. The code compiled. The pipeline ran. But the data was silently lost.

The TypeScript trap:

AI knows strict typing is hard. So it uses any everywhere to avoid type errors.

This makes the code compile. But it hides data mismatches.

You don't discover the problem until runtime. Until you test thoroughly. Until you trace the actual data flow.

The Debugging Nightmare

When a long pipeline breaks, you have to:

1. Identify which step failed

3. Find the mismatch

  • Check for naming differences, type differences, missing fields

4. Verify the fix doesn't break other steps

  • The pipeline is connected
  • Changing one step affects others
